Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker are invited to become actively involved members of our community by volunteering their time in service of our parish through ministries or by supporting those in need in our community through outreach initiatives. Below is a brief description of our outreach initiatives. Volunteers are always welcome and needed. If you are interested in participating in any of these outreach initiatives and would like more information, please contact the initiative coordinator or the parish office.
Prepare the Way Christmas Hampers

On the second Sunday of Advent, we hear in the first reading “A voice cries out in the desert prepare the way of the Lord!” For many years now as a parish we have used this quote from scripture to help our Christmas Hamper efforts be rooted in our identity as Christians. “Prepare the Way Hamper Day” has been a gift to us, allowing us to come together as a community to collect, sort, package and distribute donations to provide hampers to those in need.
This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to come together as we have in the past. Instead, we will be accepting monetary donations for the Christmas Cheer Board and Transcona Food Bank until Friday, December 18th. Donations can be deposited in a marked envelope in the mail slot at the Brewster Street entrance of our main building, or dropped off at the office during office hours.
This year will not be the same as recent years on the exterior, but there are new interior ways we will discover to “prepare the way of the Lord” not just for our 2020 Christmas celebrations, but rather for the everlasting celebration with the Lord that awaits us all. We can align our “2020 Prepare the way of the Lord” time to this cry of John the Baptist, we hear in this cry the invitation to our homes and hearts. Let us respond to commit, to endure and to hope, recognizing the eternal lasting presence of the Lord for us all and “preparing the way of the Lord” always for ourselves and one another.

The Transcona Food Bank

Winnipeg Harvest and its partner organizations, like the Transcona Food Bank, are front line responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. With schools and businesses closing, job and wages losses, vulnerable and isolated adults, the demand for food in local communities across the province is steadily increasing, and the capacity to respond is decreasing. Winnipeg Harvest and its partner organizations are continuing to operate as best as possible to ensure our neighbours have enough food to eat at this time. They need your support more than ever to stay open and keep food flowing. Please visit the Winnipeg Harvest website to learn more about you can help them at this time.
The Transcona Food Bank (an outlet of Winnipeg Harvest) serves families in need in the Transcona area. If you are in need of the Transcona Food Bank, please call Winnipeg Harvest 204-982-3660 and register for the next opening! While the province of Manitoba is in the critical (red) level on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System, places of worship are still able to collect donations for those in need (e.g. for a food bank). Please bring non-perishable food donations to the parking lot entrance of our building during office hours, press the buzzer button to speak with someone in the office. Any monetary donations can be left with the parish office. If you are unsure what to donate, consider Winnipeg Harvest's "Most Wanted Items" list:

Baby Layette Love
Baby Layette Love works to provide new mothers with clothing, blankets, toys, etc. through the Crisis Pregnancy Centre. What is a layette? Essentially, it is a baby shower in a bag! It contains the basic items needed for baby for the first few months of life. Once these items have been donated and received at our parish, Baby Layette Love will pick them up, sort them, put them into bags of 50-55 layette items and deliver them with love and prayers to a new family. For more information, click here or search for Baby Layette Love and etc. on Facebook to visit the Baby Layette Love Facebook page.
Our collection weekends were February 15/16, 2020 and February 22/23, 2020. Thank you for your generosity! |
Visiting the Sick
Volunteers regularly visit members of our community who are sick, hospitalized, or otherwise home bound, and are unable to join us for our Weekend Liturgy. This ensures an ongoing connection to our parish community. These volunteers may also bring the Eucharist. Click here to learn more about our Sick Visiting Ministry.
