St. Joseph the Worker Church, an English speaking church in Transcona, began as a mission of Notre Dame de l’Assomption. In 1958 the community that would eventually make up St. Joseph the Worker Parish began holding services in the Pirates’ Community Clubhouse building while a new worship space was under construction.
Under the guidance of Fr. Walter J. Szumski, a church and school were planned to accommodate the growing Catholic population of Transcona. Construction of the building began in 1959. The name Saint Joseph the Worker was likely chosen as a tribute to the workers of the community and their contributions to the development of Transcona.
The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on June 19, 1960 with His Grace Archbishop Maurice Baudoux and Father Walter Szumski, who was appointed the first Pastor of the parish.

Our parochial school opened on September 6, 1960. Under the direction of the Oblate Sisters until 1983, increased enrollment and programming necessitated an addition to the building, completed in 1991. As a Christ-centered community of learners, our school celebrates the unique gifts of each child and supports the family in its responsibility for the academic, social and spiritual development of the child. Many longstanding groups have contributed to the growth and development of the parish. These groups include the Brewster Social Club, Catholic Women’s League of Canada, Knights of Columbus, Couples for Christ, Friends of Jesus, Legion of Mary, Girl Guides of Canada, Scouts Canada, St. Joseph the Worker School, our Family Faith Formation Program, Parish Pastoral Council, Lectors, Greeters, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, and Music Ministry.
Currently, we are a thriving parish community, representing a diverse cultural blend. The support, commitment and devotion of the parishioners to one another and to the larger community of Transcona, are a source of encouragement and inspiration as we meet the blessings and challenges of the future.
